Gandalf (DELL R420)

This rack server was purchased on September 2013 from DELL.

Hardware Characteristics

The server has the following characteristics:

• Processor: Intel Xeon E5-2440 2.40 GHz, 15M Cache, 7.2 GT/s QPI, Turbo, 6c, 95 W

• RAM: 2x16GB RDIMM, 1600MHz

• Storage: 2x1TB SSD Samsung with RAID 1 (previous configuration 400GB SSDR 2,5” + 1TB SSD Samsung (for exclusive use of PostgreSQL))

• RAID: PERC H310 Integrated RAID Controller


• Network Adapter: 2x 1GB Ethernet

• Chassis: up to 8x2,5” Hot Plug Hard Drives

The server has three years of basic warranty provided by DELL.


The server has been named gandalf (all in lowercase) after the character of the Lord of the Rings.

It has been setup with Ubuntu Server 12.04.3 LTS. There is no hardware nor software RAID configuration at the moment.

The server IP address is and the DNS name is This IP is static and should not change upon time.

Please see SSH Key Setup instructions (User) for instructions on how to use SSH for remote access, with a public-private key pair for authentification.

A 1TB SSD Samsung disk has been purchased for exculsive use of PostgreSQL. The disk is automatically mounted on system boot. To read more about this setup you check here: [1]


The server is placed in the server room inside the laboratory (Edison 331) mounted on the top of the middle rack.
